HIGHER EDUCATION IN SPAIN

There are 51 public universities in Spain (13 are in Catalunya) and 21 private universities. Madrid has the most with 13, Barcelona has eight and Valencia four. Spain's oldest university is Salamanca, founded in 1218.
Catalunya's oldest university is the one in Lleida founded in 1295.
Entry to university is by a special exam.
Somesters are between september and May, and exams are in June. Degree courses consist of three cycles. The first, is the Diplomatura, based on a credit system. The second is the Licenciatura. The third is reseatch-based.
Spain has four different types of university: escuelas universitarias, colegios universitarios, facultades and escuelas superiores de ingeniería y arquitectura.
University fees are less expensive than England.
The top five in the country are Politecnica de Madrid; complutense de Madrid; Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona; Autónoma de Barcelona; Politécnica de Catalunya.
